Best time to fly
Weather, crowds and fares move together in Skukuza. These are the trade-offs.
May to September
Dry season. Best game viewing and the most reliable flight schedule.
October to November
Hot, greening up, quieter.
December to March
Wet season — thick bush, harder viewing, highest malaria risk.
April
Post-rains transition; the park at its greenest as it dries.
Before you go
Domestic flight
No passport or visa needed within South Africa, but you will still need a valid photo ID to board.
Currency
South African rand (ZAR). Cards are accepted almost everywhere.
Malaria
Inside a malaria-risk area, highest in the wet summer months. Take medical advice on prophylaxis before you fly.
Limited schedule
Few flights, and some seasonal. Book early and keep your plans flexible — a missed connection here is harder to recover from than at a major airport.
Park rules
You are in a national park from the moment you land. Speed limits, gate times and the rule about staying in your vehicle all apply.
About Skukuza
Skukuza is the Kruger National Park's main camp and the only airport inside the park itself. Landing here means being in the reserve on arrival rather than driving in — the terminal is a few minutes from the Sabie River and the camp's own game drives.
The schedule is small and seasonal, so flights are fewer and fill early. For most travellers it is a trade: less choice of times, no transfer drive at the other end.
Getting in from the airport
Skukuza Airport (SZK) is inside the national park, a few minutes from Skukuza rest camp. Car hire operates from the terminal, which is the usual choice for self-drive visitors; lodges in the southern Kruger and Sabi Sand will collect guests directly.
